About SmartTShirt Project

Welcome To SmartTShirt Project !

Smartfeld is an interdisciplinary initiative of the innovation network which is established by Startfeld, Empa, the GBS of St. Gallen, Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences, the University of Education St. Gallen and the University of St. Gallen.

The main objective is to foster creativity and future oriented capabilities, furthermore, to prepare children and adolescents for any challenges that this digital day and age will provide. The Startfeld Smart T-shirt project originates from an idea to offer a novel educational approach to develop the technical creativity and innovation.
The idea behind the project is to spark and ignite new ideas, insights by creating new and different skills that are needed to design, implement or create digital solutions.

Within this project, the target groups (teachers and kids) will be not only be introduced to new coding skills but the the project also opened new directions on how to interact with the chances offered by digitalization processes.

This includes for example, but is not limited to, creating and customizing its own T-shirt, replacing T-shirt with another hardware, designing new innovative products, etc.

The system architecture

The hardware part consists of different sensors connected to the RP device (e.g. Light/Color sensor, Temperature sensor, capacitive touch buttons, etc.).
Smart T-shirt/RP auto-connects to the central web server which registers the RP and creates the communication tunnel (Web socket).

The overall system architecture is composed of the following elements:
  • - Smart T-shirt with a Raspberry PI (type: Zero W or B) (RP) and associated sensors

  • - Web server: central connection point to which RP connects and gets registered

  • - Web Mobile Site: RP has a mini web server that can be started when 1-to-1 connection is used
